Marcus Aurelius was the most powerful man in the world – and this note shows how much that worried him. Writing to himself in Greek, he even coined a word for it: don’t get “Caesarified”, don’t let the purple of the emperors soak into you, “for such things happen”. In the same note he lists what to stay instead: simple, good, pure, serious, unpretentious, a friend of justice, kind and affectionate. An emperor warning himself against his own job – few lines from antiquity feel more modern.

“Take care that thou art not made into a Caesar, that thou art not dyed with this dye; for such things happen.” – Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 6.30 (transl. George Long). Marcus wrote in Greek; the Latin on the design is our own rendering (“Cave ne Caesar fias”).
