Some of the best Latin from Pompeii was never meant to last. Before Vesuvius buried the town in AD 79, someone scratched three words onto a wall: “Epaphra, glaber es” – Epaphra, you’re bald. We know nothing else about the man, but the name turns up in other graffiti too: one tells Epaphra to give back the brush, another says he is no ball player. Two thousand years later, the joke is still on him.
