Horace (65–8 BC) wrote it in a short poem to a young woman named Leuconoe, who wanted to read the future in Babylonian star charts. Don’t ask, Horace tells her – nobody knows how many winters the gods will give us. Pour the wine, cut your long hopes short: “Seize the day, and trust tomorrow as little as you can.” The Latin “carpe” really means “pluck” – pick the day like a ripe fruit.
