The story behind it
Epictetus (c. 50–135 AD) was born a slave and became one of the most influential teachers of Stoic philosophy. He never wrote a book; his student Arrian took notes in class and published them as the Discourses. This line is pure Epictetus: decide what kind of person you want to be – an athlete, a philosopher, a decent human being – and then act like it, every single day.
Details
“First tell yourself who you want to be. Then do what you have to do.” – Epictetus, Discourses 3.23.1. Epictetus wrote in Greek; the Latin on the design is our own rendering.
Back print edition: the full design on the back, a small Rome Wisdom laurel emblem on the left chest.

How we check reviews
- Before publishing a buyer’s review, we check the order number against our orders. That is what the “Verified buyer” badge means.
- We publish every genuine review, positive or critical. We only remove spam, insults and personal data.
- We don’t pay for reviews and don’t reward them with discounts. If someone received a product for free as a sample, it says so on their review.
- The rating is the average of all published reviews of this product. Newest reviews are shown first.
