The line appears twice in Virgil’s Aeneid. In Book 3, the seer Helenus prepares Aeneas for Italy. A Harpy has cursed the Trojans: hunger will drive them to eat their own tables. Don’t fear it, Helenus says – fate will find a way. And it does: in Italy they eat the wheat cakes they had used as plates. In Book 10, Jupiter tells the quarrelling gods the same. The design turns fate’s thread into the traveller’s road.
