“Let us work.” Septimius Severus, born in Leptis Magna in Africa, fought his way to the throne in AD 193 and spent much of his reign on campaign – his last war took him to Britain. In February 211 he lay dying at York. According to the Historia Augusta his last words were: “I found the state in turmoil everywhere, and I leave it at peace, even in Britain.” Then he gave the officer of the guard the watchword for the day: Laboremus – “Let us work.” Emperor Pertinax had chosen Militemus, “Let us be soldiers.” Here a stonemason swings his hammer at a Corinthian capital: Rome was built by work.
