The line comes from the Dream of Scipio, the visionary finale of Cicero’s On the Republic. The young Scipio dreams that his adoptive grandfather, Scipio Africanus – the man who defeated Hannibal – shows him the tiny Earth from among the stars. Then he tells him: you are not mortal, only your body is. You are not the figure people can point at with a finger. Your mind is who you are.
