In his Brutus, a history of Roman oratory written in 46 BC, Cicero explains why the earliest speakers sound rough. Look at sculpture: Canachus made stiff statues, Myron came closer to life, Polyclitus reached perfection. Painting went the same way. Probably every art does, he says, for nothing is invented and perfected at the same time. Even Homer had poets before him, and Livius Andronicus, who staged Rome’s first play, wrote dramas not worth reading twice.
