“Those who are about to die salute you.” Despite the films, the greeting is reported for one single day only, and it was not the usual gladiators’ salute. In AD 52 Emperor Claudius staged a sea battle on the Fucine Lake with thousands of condemned men. They called out “Hail, emperor, those who are about to die salute you!” He replied “Or not”, they took it as a pardon and refused to fight, until he ran along the shore and drove them to it. The historians Suetonius and Cassius Dio both tell the story. Here a lone fighter stands in the empty arena with his helmet in his hand.

How we check reviews
- Before publishing a buyer’s review, we check the order number against our orders. That is what the “Verified buyer” badge means.
- We publish every genuine review, positive or critical. We only remove spam, insults and personal data.
- We don’t pay for reviews and don’t reward them with discounts. If someone received a product for free as a sample, it says so on their review.
- The rating is the average of all published reviews of this product. Newest reviews are shown first.
