The story behind it
“Now is the time to drink!” Horace wrote it in 30 BC, when the news reached Rome that Cleopatra was dead and Octavian – soon to be Emperor Augustus – had won the civil war. Until then, Horace says, it would have been wrong to bring the good old wine out of the cellar; now it’s time to dance and feast. Good news has always called for a toast.
