The story behind it
“If you want peace, prepare for war.” The idea comes from the Roman writer Vegetius, whose military handbook (around 400 AD) says: “Let him who desires peace prepare for war.” It means that strength and readiness are the best protection – those who are prepared are rarely attacked.
