In AD 310 a die-cutter at the mint of Lugdunum, today’s Lyon, engraved a new coin design for Emperor Constantine: the sun god Sol with a crown of rays, holding a globe. Around him ran the words “Soli invicto comiti” – to the unconquered Sun, the emperor’s companion. It became one of the most common coins of his reign, struck for about a decade – even after his famous vision before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312.
