SPQR stands for Senatus Populusque Romanus, “the Senate and People of Rome”, the signature of the Roman state on coins, inscriptions and public buildings. The Arch of Titus still greets visitors to the Forum with SENATVS POPVLVSQVE ROMANVS. And “Est. 753 BC”? That is Rome’s legendary birthday: ancient scholars dated Romulus’ founding of the city to 21 April 753 BC – and Rome still celebrates its birthday every 21 April.
