The story behind it
SPQR stands for “Senatus Populusque Romanus” – the Senate and People of Rome. It was the official signature of the Roman state, stamped on coins, carved into monuments and carried on the standards of the legions. You can still find it all over Rome today, even on the city’s manhole covers.
