In 47 BC Julius Caesar marched against Pharnaces II, king of Pontus, who had used Rome’s civil war to seize lands in Asia Minor and defeat a Roman army. Near the town of Zela, in today’s Turkey, Caesar crushed him in one swift battle. To his friend Amantius in Rome he reported it in just three words: Veni, vidi, vici – I came, I saw, I conquered (Plutarch, Caesar 50). Back in Rome, a placard with the same three words was carried in his triumph – not to describe the war, Suetonius notes, but to show how fast it had been won.
