Horace (65–8 BC) wrote this ode to his friend Grosphus, who owned a hundred herds of Sicilian cattle and wore wool dyed in costly purple. Neither treasure nor high office, Horace tells him, can drive away the troubles of the mind. You can live well on little – like the man whose father’s salt cellar shines on a simple table, and whose light sleep no fear or greed can steal. Horace himself was content with his small farm.
