“I am a Roman citizen.” In 70 BC Cicero prosecuted Verres, the corrupt governor of Sicily. One of his worst crimes: he had Publius Gavius, a Roman citizen, flogged in the market square of Messana and then crucified. Under the lashes Gavius cried out only one sentence, “Civis Romanus sum” – the words that were meant to protect every Roman anywhere in the world. Cicero tells it in the written version of his case; that part of the speech was never delivered, because Verres fled into exile first. Here a Roman in a toga with a purple stripe lays his hand on his heart.
