The story behind it
“The judge of elegance.” That is what the historian Tacitus (c. AD 56–120) calls Petronius, a courtier of Emperor Nero who slept by day, lived by night and decided for Nero what counted as stylish. Nothing was elegant until Petronius said so. When he fell from favour in AD 66, he sent Nero a sealed list of the emperor’s own excesses before he died. Many scholars think he wrote the Satyricon, the wildest novel of antiquity, but that is not certain. Here Petronius examines a red cloth with a critical eye.
