The story behind it
“Standard-bearer, plant the standard; here we shall do best to stay.” Around 390 BC the Gauls sacked Rome. Afterwards many Romans wanted to abandon the ruins and move to the newly conquered city of Veii. Camillus argued against it, but the senate was still undecided when a company of soldiers coming back from guard duty happened to march through the Forum. Their centurion called out these words – and the senators took them as a sign from the gods. Rome was rebuilt where it stood. Livy tells the story in Book 5 of his History of Rome. Here the standard stands planted in the rubble, its red cloth still flying.
