“I have given them an empire without end.” Early in the Aeneid, Venus fears for her son Aeneas and his Trojans. Jupiter calms her and unrolls the future: Aeneas will found a city, his descendants will build Rome, and for the Romans “I set no limits in space or time: I have given them an empire without end.” Virgil wrote these lines under Augustus, when Rome had just come out of the civil wars and ruled the whole Mediterranean. Here the globe rises like the sun above the temples of Rome, framed by a victor’s laurel wreath.
