The Ninth Legion, nicknamed Hispana, came to Britain with the Roman invasion of AD 43. It was almost wiped out in Boudica’s revolt in AD 61 and rebuilt. Its last certain record in Britain is an inscription from York of AD 108 marking the rebuilding of the fortress in stone; a few later traces point to Nijmegen on the Rhine. Then the legion vanishes from history. Whether it was destroyed in northern Britain, in the Jewish revolt of 132–135 or in the East is still debated – Rosemary Sutcliff’s novel The Eagle of the Ninth made the mystery famous. Here a legionary’s helmet rests on a rock in the heather while the lost legion marches off into the mist.
