The story behind it
According to legend, the twins Romulus and Remus were abandoned by the Tiber as babies – and a she-wolf found them and fed them with her milk, until a shepherd took them in. Romulus went on to found Rome. The famous bronze wolf in Rome’s Capitoline Museums has stood for that story for centuries, although the twins beneath her were only added in the 15th century – and experts still argue whether the wolf herself is ancient or medieval.
