“What’s a ruined name, as long as the money’s safe?” The satirist Juvenal is being sarcastic. He is furious about a man convicted in a toothless trial who keeps his loot. The next line names Marius, the governor of Africa convicted around AD 100, who sits in exile drinking while the province that won the case still weeps. Here the hooded man himself, with both hands on the money bag.
