The story behind it
Romans buried their dead along the roads outside town, and many tombstones spoke straight to the people walking past. This one, from Italy, calls out twice – “Traveller, traveller!” – and then tells him: what you are, I was; what I am now, you will be too. A stone from Roman North Africa says it even more briefly: what you are, so was I; what I am, so will everyone be. Not a threat – a reminder to use the time.
