“To live is to be a soldier.” The Stoic philosopher Seneca (c. 4 BC–AD 65) wrote this to his friend Lucilius, who was grumbling about the troubles in his life. Would you rather live in the food market or in the army camp, Seneca asks, and answers: “Atqui vivere, Lucili, militare est” – and yet, Lucilius, to live is to serve as a soldier. Life is a long campaign, and a good soldier marches on without complaining. Here a lone soldier walks the winding road up the mountain towards the rising sun, his pack on his shoulder.
